Gaangga, also known as Native White Yam, was taught to me by my Nanny Dora so now I will always associate it with her. She taught me that you know the yam is ready when the leaves turn yellow and can’t be eaten raw. My Nanny Dora is a foundation of knowledge in my community and I always reach out to her for guidance around Guugu Yimidhirr culture. If it wasn’t for her support the Love Letter From Country series wouldn’t exist.
This piece was created on Gimuy Walubara Yidinji Country in Cairns, QLD.
